There are several visas available for people who seek to live and work in Australia on a temporary and permanent basis. The applicant must meet skill requirements. Some of these visas require sponsorship or nomination from an employer, State Authority, or organisation.
There are many options in this visa category that may be available to you. Depending on personal circumstances, some visas may have more advantages than others and accordingly, present a better prospect of an outcome.
Skilled and Sponsored Visas
Subclass 482
Temporary Skill Shortage Visa
Allows skilled workers sponsored by an approved employer a stay of up to 4 years to work in an approved position.
Subclass 186
Employer Nomination Scheme Visa
For skilled workers who are sponsored for a permanent visa by an Australian company.
Subclass 189
Skilled – Independent Visa
A permanent visa for invited skilled applicants who meet the Points Test stream or the New Zealand stream. There is no requirement for sponsorship by a company or family member, or nomination by a State or Territory government.
Subclass 190
Skilled – Nominated visas Visa
A permanent visa for invited skilled applicants who meet the Points Test and age and English language requirements and who are a nominated by a State or Territory government.
Subclass 491
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
This is a new visa subclass for applicants that have been invited to apply after lodging an Expression of Interest and scoring high enough on the Points Test. The visa is valid for 5 years and visa holders can become eligible to apply for permanent residence after holding the visa for 3 years. It replaced the subclass 489 visa.
Subclass 494
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa
This visa enables regional businesses to sponsor skilled migrants to work full-time for 5 years. Like the 491 visa, the holder can become eligible to apply for a permanent visa after 3 years.
Subclass 191
Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa
This visa is for people who have lived, worked, and studied in a designated regional area in Australia on a previous eligible visa. It allows the successful applicant to stay in Australia permanently.
Temporary Work Visas
Subclass 400
Temporary Work (Short Stay Activity) Visa
Allows skilled workers to undertake specialised work for up to six months. There are three streams – highly specialised, invited participant in an event by an organisation in Australia (cannot be as an entertainer or other television or film production participant and cannot be paid other than an appearance fee and reimbursements) and compelling reasons to participate in an event in Australia and it is in Australia’s interests that they attend.
Subclass 403
Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa
Holders can live and work in Australia as part of an agreement with the Australian government or for a foreign government agency.
Subclass 407
Training Visa
For an occupational trainee, a researcher at a tertiary or research institution, or a person who is at a managerial level coming to Australia for professional development, provided they are sponsored by an organisation or company.
Subclass 408
Temporary Activity Visa
Allows people to work in Australia for up to two years if sponsored by a company or an organisation and part of an exchange program, or a sports person, a religious worker, or a domestic worker (a domestic worker can only be sponsored by a foreign organisation or government).
Subclass 476
Skilled – Recognized Graduate Visa
An 18-month visa that allows certain graduates (currently only engineering) from specified countries to live and work in Australia.
Subclass 485
Skilled – Temporary Graduate Visa
Allows graduates from Australian courses to remain in Australia provided they meet the two-year study requirement, the English language requirements and are under 50. The Graduate Work stream visa allows an 18-month stay, and the Post Study Work stream visa can be granted for two to four years.

Subclass 124
Distinguished Talent Visa
An offshore permanent visa for applicants, supported by an Australian organisation or person, with an internationally recognised talent in the areas of profession, music, arts, sport, or academic and research endeavour.
Subclass 858
Global Talent Visa
A permanent visa for applicants, supported by an accredited Australian organisation or person, with an internationally recognised talent in the areas of tech-based profession or STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field.
